The initial idea for the Midnight Society was generated when I was working on my Empire City book. Originally it was supposed to be a masquerade party with numerous characters in unique masks. It was one of several pieces that I never got around to creating for the book.

Since I never throw away any of my unused ideas, this one stayed on my list for years. When I finally found the inspiration to dive in, I decided that instead of the masquerade party, I’d switch it to a secret society, as I wasn’t really crazy about designing a whole bunch of people in masks. I’d much rather draw faces.
