One of the bridges in New York -- at night on a cruise (again, how do you maximize the lights and not the background in these situations? PS seems like cheating)

My guess would be to try a fireworks mode if you wish to use a default mode or a long shutter speed and wide aperture should help to maximize the lights and minimize the background. Just a possibility.

By the way nice shot.
