This film was the highest grossing film ever for 11 years, beating out the original Star Wars. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, but lost to Gandhi because the Academy loves them some biopics. Spielberg broke the highest grossing film of all time record again with Jurassic Park, which, unlike the previous three record holders, Jaws, Star Wars, and E. T., wasn’t even nominated for Best Picture, but at least Spielberg’s other film that year, Schindler’s List, was not only nominated for Best Picture, but is the only film he directed to win the award.
