Coraline by MysticSparkleWings on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Another truly proper drawing from me! And it's not for a reason other than I just wanted to draw it this time! :la:

So you guys probably don't know that I'm actually quite the Coraline fancier, given that it's obviously (at least to me) Alice in Wonderland inspired, and the movie was also under the guidance of Tim Burton. And claymation, which I'm actually pretty attracted to, it's just not all that common of a medium, unfortunately.

I've never actually read the book, though from what I hear it's pretty different from the movie, so that might be a good thing. (I'm usually notoriously hard on book-to-movie adaptions if they're not nearly identical) And the movie is also a little aged, having come out in 2009, and I didn't see it until last year. But I do remember seeing the trailers on TV all that time ago. I think I was too young to understand what it really was, though.

Regardless, I do really enjoy the movie and Coraline herself. And having watched it again recently to introduce someone else to it, I got the urge to draw the leading lady in my chibi, tan-paper, white-outline way.

She came out slightly different style-wise because the movie is very stylistic, and I was using what I'm assuming (I found it on Pinterest, I have no information) was a picture of one of the actual movie clay models for reference. She still came out undeniably different due to my own style sneaking in there, naturally.

I think this is one of the better showings of my skill with my Prismacolors, though. I feel like her hair and boots came out particularly well. And the shading on her raincoat is almost like it should be. It doesn't show up quite as notable as I would like, but I really am beginning to think part of it is the scanner. Her hairpin got a little lost though :P

Fortunately or not, Coraline doesn't really have a "signature" outfit, since she actually changes clothes several times throughout the movie, so I went with what I could find the best reference of that wasn't obscured color-wise by the lighting or funky scenery.

I intentionally left the shine out of her eyes since it isn't really present throughout the movie and just didn't seem right. And I didn't white-gelly-roll the shine in her hair for the same reason. All her hair shine seems to be blue, so I tried to do that.

I think this was also my first time doing freckles with the Prismacolors too.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it, my main complaint just being I'm not sure how I feel about her face as a whole, but it's still good, I'm just not sure it came out exactly how I wanted it too.

Also, I have the plain line art of this scanned in and may upload it separately in the future if I think people would find interest in coloring it in, if that means anything to you.
