This is finally done. About 130 hours in total. I really enjoy making these wide format illustrations despite the long hours and sometimes the tedium of trying to get everything right. However I unashamedly love the subject matter and think it deserves all the love and attention I can muster. I can’t fathom how anyone could go through life without experiencing curiosity and awe for the natural world. For me, a lot of that awe just happens to be focused on the history of life on our planet and the astounding and strange variety of bygone animal life that now only exists as echoes in the rock. I also really enjoy this wide aspect ratio I’ve been working with lately. I think it’s a great format for conveying drama and showing the grandeur of a bygone age of our planet.
So here’s Colorado 155 million ago, in the mid-jurassic. The Morrison formation sweeps through Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas. It was home to many plants and animals that made up a strange and exciting ecosystem. Two of these animals were stegosaurus stenops and allosaurus fragilis.
