The White Ape by NicolasRGiacondino on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Happy Thor's Day, folks!

This has been a pretty busy week (as usual), so my time is very limited when it comes to warm-ups and side pieces just for fun. That said, I do try and find a bit of time everyday to do something outside my workload and I obviously fall back onto my passions, one of them being this latest Barsoomian theme I've been going through (which you folks also seem to enjoy, luckily!).

Edgar Rice Burroughs describes many creatures in the world of John Carter's Mars, so it's really just a matter of picking the ones you like the most and going to town. But since I usually like to give myself a guiding limit in everything I do so as not to end up doing nothing, I have decided to cover the aliens upon Barsoom as Mr. Carter encounters them in the book, starting with the Tharks, Woola the Calot and now, the mighty White Apes!
I believe the thing I like the most about this small piece is the fact that it is contained within the frame of the window into which we're looking at the action. I think it adds a focus on the inside of the ruins and leaves a bit of the whole interior and the creature itself to the imagination of the viewer, whom can fill in the blanks with the information I've provided. That usually makes the experience of viewing art more involved and an exchange between your imagination, mine and the author's vision and descriptions, instead of me just telling you all with my strokes.

So, as usual, I hope you enjoy this new glimpse into Barsoom and I'll see you tomorrow with a new FREE MARS piece for Friday :D
