This repaint started out as Tonner's 17-inch Capt. Jack Sparrow. I wanted to recreate the likeness of Johnny Depp , not as Jack Sparrow, but just as himself. I removed all factory facial paint and completely repainted the doll to resemble Johnny Depp. The hair underwent extensive hair styling, starting with a haircut, then partial reroot to give his hair a middle part and to fill in sparse areas. Then hair was heat permed and styled to replicate Depp's. Lastly, I hand painted three of his tattoos.
Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area . Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.
