on the ice by osquibb on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

ok.... wow, so much to say.

went to lake michigan last weekend with the full intention of acting like an arctic explorer for the entire weekend. and so i did!

the ridiculous steps taken to make these 2 photographs:

  1. drag the big 'ol 1967 polaroid 210 camera out onto the ice.
  2. remove gloves (you just can't use this thing with gloves on) in 5 degree (F) weather.
  3. fold out the bellows, ready the shutter, adjust the exposure dial, focus, compose, shoot.
  4. pull out film quickly with frozen fingers, quickly put it inside a somewhat warm back pack, start the stop watch, wait for 2 minutes.
  5. open bag and peel apart the film. put it in a dry spot in the bag and leave for another few minutes.
  6. start the process over again very quickly before the film starts freezing for the next shot.
  7. run back to the lake house at 45 mph and ask yourself, "why the heck did i just do that?!" :P

- i ended up with frozen hands and 8 wasted polaroids... but it was all soooooo much better than shooting with digital. sooooo much better! the process is beggining to outweigh the results for me, and polaroids seem to be the answer to this.i really felt like an artic explorer that day :D
