UniBlock by PaladinPolecat on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

The signature mascot mook of most of my game projects, this animated cardboard cube takes double damage from every element and has 6, 36, or 66 in every stat (depending on scaling issues).

This vector version is an emoji I made for a Discord server I share with a small but committed set of friends plus a horse. =]

I made the monster for RPG Maker on PS1. Frustrated by the inputs and limitations of its inbuilt sprite editor, I made a yellow square and drew a smiley face on it with straight black lines; I called the resulting sprite UniBlock in frustration that even the lowest quality graphic was taking up a full Memory Card block on its own (I've since learned it's even worse - big sprites can take up more than one block!). In that very first game, the only character who didn't always beat the UniBlock in one turn of physical attacking was the wizardess Mira, only if she had no weapon equipped, and only if she was still level 1.

Depending on the game, 6 experience points, 6 of the currency (gold, silver, copper, wazoo, pazooza, bits, etc), and a 6% chance of dropping a cardboard shield can be either a really good early game grindpoint or an absolute joke bordering on insult relative to the difficulty. Something with 6 HP and 6 DEF is way different in Paper Mario than it is in a Final Fantasy. In the former it'd be required to be relegated to a late-game area and present a rather serious threat.
