Warforged Fighter and Human Wizard by peachyco on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

My first work in 2012. Happy New Year!

A sketch of two actual D&D4E characters, a warforged fighter and a human wizard. Penciled and inked on an A3 sheet, scanned and adjusted in Adobe Photoshop.

Maven Makarov is a wizard who enjoys bending others to her will. She is seen here to be carrying her Staff of Defense. When she discovered a dormant warforged in the ruins of an ancient castle, she brought it back to life with her knowledge of the arcane arts. Since the warforged had no memory of its past, she has taken to calling it "Hummer".

Having been dormant for centuries, Hummer is having difficulty recovering his memories. For some reason, he has an unexplainable and iron-clad loyalty to Maven, whom he sees as the reason for his existence.

The markings on his elaborate armour suggest a role in the royal palace, and his incredible combat prowess suggests a special bodyguard. In reality, he was built as a bodyguard to the princesses of an ancient civilisation. Unlike most of his kind but like all of those in his role, his face is like an immovable, human-like mask, an effort to lessen the effect on the royalty of seeing an "artificial" creature. The "tear streaks" on his face have been added later through a Creation Forge - and thus do not heal like wounds do - to reflect the sadness of the princesses over the death of their father. His speech is generated from his throat, the sound coming out through the small holes along his "mouth".

I joined the campaign when it was already ongoing, and I had intended to build a warforged fighter. When they told me that they had activated and freed a warforged NPC in an older adventure, I decided to use its character and background. The player who was running Maven then suggested (in very strong terms) the S&M relationship, and she and I have been sticking to this since I joined. Hummer carries Maven around, and if she insists on it, he'll stand by her even if there is a more advantageous location nearby.

The DM appreciates our dedication, I think, because he's throwing adventures, items, and hooks that work on our "sub-group". I think he's even saved us from being TPK'd once: Everyone else was dying (mainly because Maven stayed at the back and ordered the strongest defender to stay with her), then all of a sudden, the enemy became doofuses and started missing rather frequently. I mean, sure, my fighter is an optimised tank, but I don't think I'm untouchable... ^__^
