Description

Waco Suspension Bridge over Brazos River, Indian Springs Park, Waco, TX

The Waco Suspension Bridge was the first bridge built across the Brazos River in the Waco area in 1870 due to demand caused by the Chisolm Trail. At the time of it's completion it was the longest suspension bridge west of the Mississippi River. This bridge helped Waco rise to prosperity, becoming the central Texas capitol of cotton and cattle. The bridge has been renovated several times in it's 154 year history, including a recent restoration completed in April 2023. It was open to vehicular traffic until 1971 and now serves as a pedestrian bridge.
