I've seen something like this as a kid. It was on a farm next to the highway. It almost looked like an old hill grave, but I bet that it was either a root cellar (where you stored your harvest), or an early form of a fridge (where you store ice from the winter, which slowly melts in summer). Oddly enough, it did have an old tree right in the center of it.
