A little more about your grandad's bike. It was one of the later FL models. These were given Panhead engines in 1948 or so, and by 1949 depending on the order, I guess, they dropped the springer front forks and went to the hydraulic ones. At this point the "FL" became the "Hydra-Glide" because of the hydraulic forks. Um, which as it evolved further would become the "Duo-Glide" and then the "Electra-Glide" in honor of its new-fangled electric starter.

So this pretty much nails the year of his bike to 1948, I'd say.
