[ Part One ]

In the evening of summer with the final show finished of the Benzini Brothers circus, with workmen packing up the fairgrounds, chatter and snorts from the animals in the distance the sun had set now a quiet night. Another successful day of selling out tickets and the workers paid their fair share, the Benzini Brothers were finally becoming one of the famous circuses.

Dylan had entered the stateroom pulling her gown up over her ankles in caution not to trip on the iconic dress she represented, a ball gown like that for rich people.. or a princess. The stateroom was quiet with the smell of bittersweet whiskey and the faint aroma of smoke in the air from the cigarette that sat in an ashtray on the table. He had been standing at the end of the king size bed draped with a feather quilt from the request of Dylan, clawing at his collar of his dress shirt. Hearing the floor squeal slightly and the heels of her shoes he spoke, maintaining his focus on undressing his tie, "Darling? Is that you?"

"Yes darling."

"See? I know you even just by the sound of your heels."

She raised a brow feeling slightly mischievous, "What if it had been Barbra?"

"That coochie girl would not have made herself too welcomed in my presence. Besides she doesn't carry the same elegance in those heels.." He unbuttoned his shirt a few down his chest turning to face her, "You know those heels are sexy the way you walk in them." He grinned, "It always turns me on."

She rolled her eyes putting her hands on her petite framed hips with a smile, "Typical August."

"What? It's a compliment darling."

Walking towards her he grabbed her waist pulling her into his tall, stocky frame towering over her height. The corner of his lips tugged into a smile as her body brushed against his, "I'm lucky to have you. Such a beautiful woman and delicate too." He began to sway his hips gently to the music playing quietly in the background, "Do you love this life- the circus life?"

She placed her hands on his broad shoulders, feeling his body heat through their clothes, she began to softly sway with him.

"I do. But some days I feel like I would enjoy the idea of living in a home in the city. Not having to worry if we're going to starve or eat, or if the animals die from the insufficient funds we need to support them."

His eyes grew dim and his jaw pulsed faintly. Somehow she was right. Although they were doing well in the circus, there had been multiple times the Benzini Brothers would pull in money and lose it. Get new attractions and lose them, or going in debt from not selling enough tickets. August drew a slight sigh, more so being a little frustrated.

"I have a good feeling about it this time - about us. I got you in the Benzini Brothers and you're my top star, other than that bull. You

u make this circus. Our tickets are sold out at shows and we've been fed.. even the animals. I know living in the city and having a white picket fence sounds like the dream but this circus is our home. It's what I am and what you are too darling."

"I know August. I should be more grateful I guess.", she responded quietly.

His eyes focused on her with silence, "Do you want to leave me?"

The smell of warm whiskey on his breath.

"Hm?", she perked up. "What- no. Absolutely not. I love you August and I don't care what happens or where we end up. I'm always going to be right here." Her hands lifted from his shoulders grabbing either side of his slender face as handsome as the devil. "Okay?"

He closed his eyes as her hands touched his face like that of soothing him for a moment, lowering himself into her with his face buried in her neck and his arms wrapped around her torso. He inhaled smelling her scent of a subtle floral dew as if it had been her presence to make him feel assured.

Dylan smiled faintly stroking the back of his neck gently, speaking softly, "Want another glass of whiskey?"

"Yes please darling."

Pulling away from him and guiding him to a chair at the table she assisted him to sit down before pouring him another glass of the golden liquor. Setting the bottle down she handed him the glass she leaned against the edge of the table on her left thigh. Grabbing the glass his lips drew back a sip and rested it onto the table with his hand still wrapped around it. Noticing her not pouring herself a drink he became suspicious.. even more how she never touched liquor in a few weeks. He remembered bringing it up once or twice but a third time? Something was off and he knew it.

"Another night and I'm drinking alone again. What's the matter darling you don't drink anymore and you seem exhausted more than usual."

She kept quiet humming and hawing on her response unsure of his reaction. He was possibly on his third drink of the night.. would she get a happy August or a mean August? Pulling away from the table she took a few steps back to present herself in the middle of the room, crossing her arms and leaning her weight on her right foot, her left thigh exposed more.

"I'm pregnant."

The room was silent and it was the loudest thing she heard. His eyes stared at her as if he had become sober the second she finished her announcement. He was not prepared for this and somehow he doubted this idea of her reasoning for not partaking in drinking.

"Pregnant?", his brows furrowed sitting forward in his chair with his elbows on his knees looking to whatever was ahead of him or at his feet.

"How did this- how could this happen? I thought we weren't ready and we-.." His expression changed to worrisome, "Having a baby on the train in amongst all these- these rubes and animals. The money. What about the money." He looked up to her with widened, heavy eyes. He was silent gazing up at her, "How are we going to raise a baby on the damn train???" He stared at her moments longer before his brows lowered a little and his voice becoming more stern, "Is that why you said all that stuff about the home?"

"I-.. I don't know." Her voice a little shaky. "I know we aren't prepared for a baby on the train right now but it might not be a bad thing. You bought an elephant and made it work when you couldn't at the time but it became a good thing. All I'm saying August is that it's not necessarily a bad thing. And we can make it work." She knew August doesn't like being stood up to, especially when his mood shifted.

"This is different. It's not an elephant or a fucking monkey." His eyes focused on her as he looked away to grab his glass and throw it down in one gulp, spontaneously throwing the glass at the wall shattering it into pieces, "Fuck!" He lowered his face with his hands holding either side of his head, his fingers in his hair, and resting elbows on his knees.

Jumping from the sudden shout and glass shatter her mouth formed a O shape clapping her hand over her mouth. Her teary eyes widened staring at him for a moment before whipping around and running out of the stateroom. Hearing her run out his head perked up quickly with his hair that's styled with a comb now unkempt jumping out of his seat, "Dylan!" Chasing after her towards the door he stopped at the entrance of the car holding onto the railing, looking around in the gloomy darkness lit up only by lanterns.

Part 2 next..

I was getting into writing this and if I can add part two into this post I will. I just don't know if I have enough space left to write it.
