The Picard Manoeuvre by Pundus on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

It was in mere minutes from the U.S.S. Stargazer simply patrolling the Maxia Zeta star system, to it being hammered by weapons fire — unprovoked — from an unknown starship. In a last-ditch gamble to save his ship, a young Captain Jean-Luc Picard initiated a high-warp jump for a fraction of a second. The faster-than-light travel and difference in location was enough to create a sensor ghost on enemy scanners. Two targets, once chance to fire, or be fired upon, and they chose the wrong one. This would come to be known as the Picard Maneuver.

Although the battle was won, the victory was pyrrhic. The Stargazer had to be abandoned. An unknown assailant meant Starfleet could not risk a salvage effort, and so the fair lady was left adrift.

I've taken a liking to warp effects in the recent era of Trek. Of course, the classic TMP-era streaking rainbow and the TNG-era horizontal abberated rain will always hold a special place in my heart. But, the fast and oompfy feel of the new and blue effects have that cool edge to them. Both the JJ's generic one, and the Discovery's banging one. I tried to create what I envision a modern Picard Maneuver would look like these days.
