Dew by Purrlstar on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

This is Dew.

Some of my very very old watchers might remember her, because the only pieces that exist of her in my gallery are all the way on the last (or first?) page, and there's only two of them!

Her character was created back during my Neopets days as well, I made her for an application while trying to adopt a UC Grey Wocky. Since then however, she's developed into something much more than a Neopet with a story.

Her story, goes something like this:

She was born into a tribe of cats that existed off more of the hierarchy type based on bloodline.
Dew herself was the daughter of the Symbol reader, Flint, and his mate Forsythia was the sister of the current leader.

The Symbol reader was an extremely special rank in the tribe, they were the shaman, of sorts, pulling omens from the scenery around them and reading the symbols of everyday life so as to avoid disaster.
The whole tribe was centered around what the Symbol reader saw on an every day basis, and they would not make any decisions without consulting the reader beforehand.

There was a symbol for everything, and they've even developed legends of how new symbols were discovered or created, which includes the most legendary soldier in history to have been born with the symbol of a warrior on his forehead, and he did not fail to uphold his reputation.

Yes, each cat has markings in their own fur that will even translate into symbols, and it is the Symbol reader's job to intemperate the coat of a newborn kit so that the tribe knew of each member's individual prophecy.

Dew had a sister, Mist, who was born with the symbol of the sick in her coat, and a few weeks after birth she died.

Dew herself, had a symbol of misfortune sprawled across her flanks, but Flint kept that secret from everyone since his only surviving daughter was to become the next Symbol reader, (Because the leader already had his mate and kits, and his son was in line to be the next leader) Because of this, Flint only told everyone about the symbol of prophecy that displayed itself proudly on her chest fur.

Flint trained his daughter well in the ways of Symbol reading, and he kept an extremely watchful eye on her so that the misfortune event that was bound to happen at some point in time, would be delayed as long as possible.

It wasn't until Dew was a young adult that the misfortune showed itself for the first time.

She was out, alone, searching for symbols to predict where the best hunting would be for the day so that the hunters of the tribe could go out and feed the rest of them, when she came across something, odd.
It was a symbol she had never seen before.

She had been instructed that if this event was to occur, she should report directly to Flint... But, there was something... Different, mysterious, about this symbol. So she had to get a closer inspection.

That closer inspection was her downfall.

The symbol was a cursed omen, upon touching the symbol she was sent into unconsciousness, and given an extremely graphic vision of all her tribe being slaughtered horrifically by terrible monsters, and forced to watch as everyone she knew and loved died before her eyes.

There was another cat there, with dark gray fur, old, and rather angry, who told Dew that because she touched the curse, what she had witnessed today will now come true.

And, her beautiful cream fur would transform into the dull gray it is today.

Yes you read that correctly, she used to be a brilliant golden-cream color, and everyone in her tribe envied her for her coat.

When Dew returned to her tribe, and they saw her, covered in mud, and a different color, some of her markings had changed, including the mark of misfortune completely vanished from her coat, but the curse radiated off of her in waves and the symbol of the prophet had transformed itself into nearly the same cursed emblem that Dew had run across moments before.

Flint had no other choices, and he banished his daughter from the tribe lest the curse spread to more important figures. He would just... have to find another one to take over the symbol-reading job, have more kits, perhaps?

Dew was shocked, but she did as she was told, the last thing she wanted to do was hurt anyone. But, she had to tell them about what she saw! About the prophecy the old gray she-cat had shown her!

But they didn't listen.

I have written all of this, and the rest of it, into an actual story that I put on the application I created, but its very out-of-date now and needs a re-write, I will possibly do that and post it on DA if I get enough interest.

Thank you for reading!

:bulletblue: Fur color: Grey and Darker gray, formerly cream.

:bulletblue: Accessories: N/A

:bulletblue: Special: Her fur is very very long and fluffy, she takes great pride in making sure its always neat, orderly, and presentable.

:bulletblue: Random facts:

- She was the first character that had an 'offical' hairfluff that fell over one of her eyes, and blocked it from view at all times.

- I did not ever obtain the neopet I was applying for when I created Dew as a character, but neither did the actual winner, the owner kept it and then traded her off contrary to what they promised after putting her UFA

- I absolutely adore Dew as a character, and even though I rarely draw her she is one of those characters that I keep tabs on in my head at all times.

- Her name was taken from the neopet's name I was applying for, by the help of ~Frightling she helped me get the name Dew out of "We_flipped"

- She has the darkest blue eyes out of all my characters.

- She was one of the first female characters I created that I actually liked.
