During the early 2400s, as the Excelsior-IIs were starting to stretch-out into regular service; but, another war was brewing in the depths of the former Romulan Space, more specifically Iconia.

So, it was decided to convert an Excelsior-II into what would become the prototype for the Excelsior-X Class Dreadnought.

The Excelsior-X Class Dreadnoughts, also known as Dominion-II Dreadnoughts, are a series of heavy warships built for the onset of the Iconian War. The Excelsior-X takes its main inspiration from the Galaxy-X Class, the tri-nacelle layout, with the original nacelles lowered so they can't be hit from straight-on; it has a twin Phaser Beam Cannon mount directly above & towards the rear of the main bridge; it also had winglets, darting from the original pylons also akin to the Galaxy-X.

The newest innovation on the Excelsior-X was the introduction of the "Shotgun-style" Phaser Lance, this phaser lance was different to the ones equipped on the Galaxy-X and its class successors, as the lance was divided into two channels, and as such, two beams fired out; it is possible for both beams to cross and form a Phaser Blast Beam, this beam can pierce through the hull of a Voth Capital Ship with no effort, but it was effective to force an Iconian Heavy Battleship to stand-down after it's shields were knocked completely offline by the beam.

The Excelsior-Xs are built either at Andoria Shipyards, Boreth Shipyards or in rare cases at Cardassia Shipyards; and in an additional case, the Quantum Shipyards took heed of five members of the 27 strong class of the Excelsior-Xs.

The Excelsior-X Class Dreadnoughts are still in active service, serving as Flagships, or in an Attack Wings.
