Axolotls are a salamander species that is found in underground lakes near Mexico City. They are critically endangered in the wild, but they exist in the pet trade. They are closely related to the tiger salamander. Unlike most salamander species, they do not undergo metamorphosis, instead retaining their juvenile features like gills and a finned tail in a feature known as neotony.
