Dragon Queen - Coloured by Saerileth on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Behold Lumanta, the Queen of the Golden Dragons, in her natural and her human (or not so human) form.
The pencil version of this picture was my entry to a commission about a series of books that are about to be published.

I spent about half a year on and off working on this. The dragon took me ages, and I paused for months working up the courage to start on the girl. The more I like certain parts of a picture, the more hestistant I grow of continuing. I hate ruining things. Which I promtly did with that bottom bit of the frame - you might notice it's not round. Not even close to it. Damn my impatience...

I'm rather proud with the outcome nevertheless. Notice that it's quite different from the initial sketch - I just hated the way the dragon didn't look particularly female or regal at all. I also added lots and lots of hints on the girls identity, since my sisters vehemently stated she looked more like the dragon's rider. It should be blinding obvious now.
I also had to reconsider the inclusion of the sword, since it kind of screwed up the composition. I'll make a point of including it in future pictures, since it plays a major role in the plot. This is the first time I really took some time and thought through a composition for a picture, by the way. It's kind of the first one complicated enough to warrant the effort.

There's a seam in the middle of image that I've tried hard to conceal. I want a bigger scanner. :(
