Les Merveilleuses: Retro Classical Lolita Fashions

What is Classical Lolita fashion?
:bulletred: Classical Lolita is one of the subsets of Lolita fashion, a style of street fashion that originated in Japan during the 1980s. The fashion is largely an adaptation of Victorian clothing, mimicking the attention to detail as well as the bell-shaped silhouette of the knee-length skirts that were worn by Victorian girls; Lolita fashion also borrows certain elements from the Rococo fashions of the 18th century. While the fashion stresses elegance and modesty, it largely builds on the principle that "dress is a form of art." Classical Lolita, in particular, is the most historically-oriented subset, as it aims to create a more mature look than the others, namely Sweet Lolita. As with all the other styles, Classical Lolita stresses modesty and elegance, but it places extra emphasis on elegance; this style is mature, refined, and classy, but also youthful. The most notable Classical Lolita brands include Innocent World, Mary Magdalene, Victorian Maiden, and Juliette et Justine.

This set includes (from left to right):

I. This one-piece dress comes in a deep maroon color with dusty-pink polka dots; the same pink lines the sweet-heart neckline and the scalloped border. A lighter dusty-pink underskirt peaks out from beneath the scalloped hem. The detachable brooch, which features a large pink rose and white beads, gives this dress its 1920's charm. Complete the look with a ribbon and bead choker and a cloche hat that's decked in matching roses.

II. This one-piece dress features a chocolate-brown top with rolled-back elbow-length sleeves and a fashionable sweet-heart neckline. A light green belt decorated with a matching bow creates a defined waist and separates the bodice from the skirt. The apple-green and red-orange plaid skirt flares out, broken up only by a faux under-layer of chocolate brown sunburst pleats. This '40s inspired dress looks great with wide fishnets and boots.

III. Based on a 1920's evening dress, this one-piece gives a whole new look to Lolita fashion. The triple-tiered over-dress features a cream and dark cocoa art-deco style pattern, which is broken up in the front by the faux under-dress. A bronze border trims the sleeves, neckline, and underdress; the layer-looked is softened by a ruffled bronze underskirt. A detachable ribbon and beaded brooch and multi-chain necklace add to the flapper aesthetic. Complete the look with a two-tone cloche, fishnets, and matching booties.
