The Death Of Two, The Life Of Two More by SergeantMajorSir on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

An eye for an eye, as a cruel whim of fate would have it.

This is the scene where Rosalie and the unknown male fawn find the body of not Rosalie’s mother, Etta, but of his mum instead.

As it goes, a rockslide was started due to a heavy thunderstorm, causing the deer herd below to go into a panic. As the herd fled, Rosalie was ushered to safety by Etta, her mother, where they rested shortly. However, when they both turned to look back at the ongoing disaster, Etta noticed the shape of a doe in a blind panic, struggling amidst the falling debris and the clouds of earth sprayed into the air. With the doe, unable to keep up, was her only child, a fawn a few days old. Rosalie watched as her mother gently licked her forehead, urging her to stay put, before she rushed over to aid the floundering fawn. She managed to pull him out of harms way, where she yet again went back, this time for his mother. Rosalie lost sight of them between the clouds of dust and shattered rocks but obeyed her mother’s words and remained where she was until nightfall, when the avalanche had subsided.

She crawled out of her hiding space, calling after her mother, when she stumbled down the side of a muddy ditch a rock had carved and crashed into the stranger’s son. After some quiet shock they began to talk and agreed to go searching for their dam’s together. This is the moment they stumble across the male fawn’s mother, lying still amongst some smaller stones, battered and limp. Neither fawn said a word and only stared. They did not find Etta.
