How does a tailmouth work?

reposting from my FA journal, I wrote this a while ago. I've had a few people ask about my interpretations of tailmouths, and now I've really had time to formulate how they live and work I thought it'd be cool to write up an info post! This is just my interpretation of them - yours DO NOT have to be like this (actually I might prefer it if they weren't).
