Mon Calamari Shipyards MC80B star cruiser by Shoguneagle on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Following the Battle of Endor, the fledgling New Republic found itself facing off against various Imperial warlords, some with a wide range of fleet assets that often included star destroyers and other large capital warships. Much of the Alliance fleet and the early New Republic Navy was a hodge-podge collection of older, converted ships; even their prized Mon Calamari cruisers were converted luxury liners and commercial vessels from the early days of the Rebellion. What was needed were dedicated warships: built and designed specifically for military fleet engagements, that could take and dish out anything the fallen Empire had.

The MC80B was one of the first dedicated combat vessels to emerge from Mon Cala's shipyards, equipped with the most powerful back-up shield generators of the era, a faster sublight speed, armored hull plating, and even more crucial, expanded starfighter capability. While most MC80Bs carried four squadrons of fighters, the enlarged hangars and maintenance bays could accommodate up to eight, exceeding the TIE compliment of Imperial-I and II-class vessels.

Perhaps the most renowned and decorated MC80B of the New Republic Navy was the Mon Remonda, which was instrumental in the campaign against the strongest of the Imperial Warlords, Admiral Zsinj, until its demise at the hands of the Dark Empire's World Devastator Silencer-7 at the Battle of Mon Calamari four years later.
