Greatest Lois Lane Artists: Bob Oksner by SnakePrince55 on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

I'll be covering a lot of my favorite Superman and Batman artists over the coming months, and I will slowly roll that out as time goes by - but along with that I also had to take the time to roll out my favorite artists of the Daily Planet's star girl reporter - LOIS LANE! The usual suspects will arrive on this page in time, but for now I'm covering an artist who drew Superman's girl friend in all her gutsy glamour and glory - Bob Oksner (1916-2007).

A significant influence on other phenomenal cartoonists such as Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Kevin Nowlan, Oksner much like those two, also happened to be an all-star cartoonist, who just happened to bring his mastery to nearly every project that he was ever put on. Looking at the above pages and panels he draws a thoroughly beautiful and bold Lois Lane. Fitting in perfectly with the dynamic fashion stylings of the late 70s to early 80s period, from the hairstyle to the outfits - he draws her with such care and attention that even the most casual poses breathe such incredible life.

Oksner happened to be just one of those artists who could work in a wide variety of genres and then when tasked with drawing superhero comics, he managed to find a way to bring all his experience in the other genres to full bloom so that they could blossom into truly beautiful comics. Look at the above pages and you see not only a beautiful and spunky Lois Lane, but you see a master storyteller in full command. From body language, composition, action across the page, mastery of anatomy, structure, background, and an incredible rendering of the figure across a given space - he was an all star.

Plus I love the fact that Lois here is fitting in perfectly with the era and its mood, feeling and style. She is every bit the sassy and stylish reporter she always was, but can fit in with the 70s gutsy career gal as well as the 80s sleek news siren.
