The Vergueiro Rifle by Soares1993 on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

The Vergueiro rifle is a bolt-action rifle designed by infantry officer José Alberto Vergueiro in 1904 from the famous German Mauser Gewehr98, sharing many physical features, making the weapon commonly refered as ‘Mauser Vergueiro’ or the ‘Portuguese Mauser’.

The rifle was produced from 1904 to 1945, with the one showed above being a later shorter model that fitted the 7.92mm Mauser ammunition adopted by the Portuguese in 1939.

This rifle was used by Viriato’s grandfather and the first attachment it recieved was the sniper scope and the bolt handle was bent down in order to fit the scope. The original model had the bolt handle straight. The weapon also came with the original Model 1904 Bayonet.

When the Salazar Organization managed to obtain the rifle, they modified the weapon in order to fit an optional 10 round box magazine and designed a silencer specifically for this rifle.

Viriato is unable to use the silencer and the bayonet simultaneously due to the inserts of each of them being too different.

Despite having the box magazine, Viriato can also simply insert two 5 round stripper clips into it, specially if he is in a mission fighting the Nazis that use the same caliber, as ammunition is plentiful.

I’m not aware of any information that in real life the Vergueiro rifle ever fitted the famous ‘PU’ scope or any sniper scope at all and the modifications made by the Salazar Organization are ficticious.
