The Last Leaf of Autumn

The wind tugs at my veins But I refuse to fall The rest are long gone, back to the earth I cannot join them. Every storm attempts to coax me down, Every gale pulls at my will But I refuse to submit to the howling winds I have known this tree all of my life From my birth in the April sun To the turning of my colours in October. But I will never leave this tree. Beneath me my brothers and sisters lie in their tombs Ready to dissolve into nothing Ready to become life for the very tree that birthed them But the wind will never take me And I am alone here unable to join them. There is nothing here at the top Empty branches are my only company The wind still tugs at my stubborn body My edges are frayed and my green is now brown I curl and shrivel like a corpse But I refuse to die like the others down there For I have always been safer here Down there I will not last Down there I will see nothing Down there I will have parted from that which gave me life. And now the new year
