Artist Statement:
I first became interested in rats as a subject matter because of their color scheme, primarily the red and white in albino rats. I then considered what rats are and what they mean to people. Rats are intelligent, they are used for scientific advancement, some have been domesticated to be pets, to some people they’re a source of disgust, carriers of disease. Having not seen many rats in fine art, I chose to study and elevate these creatures through oil painting.
I begin my process by thinking of a theme. Two of these works are related to the concept of vivisections and the last, “rats forming a shape”. I sketch it out in acrylic, render it in oil, and then try to emphasize a few areas with impasto. I use various brushes as well as my fingers to smudge and stain certain areas.
Through this exploration of rats, I’ve come to love them despite never having a rat in my life. I hope that others may find beauty in these critters as well.
