Description

As the first free-roaming 3D Mario title for Nintendo, this platforming game premiered as one of Nintendo 64's launch titles featuring the plumber/hero himself traversing a multitude of varying worlds in order to [once again] rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of evil King Koopa. The overworld in this game is quite different from previous titles' as the player directs Mario through "worlds" which are various locations in Peach's castle and into paintings which are the levels. Collecting stars scattered in each level allows Mario to unlock additional rooms.

Incredibly hyped upon in my household, this console and game were ridiculously anticipated. Even though I still have grumbly frustration with the N64's control scheme, I adore this title for how uniquely it presented itself. Definitely a second only to Super Mario World for me!
