Mini Tutorial by StarrSpice on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Here's a Mini tutorial on how I draw! as well as my pen settings (I've recently started using customized pens).

1. Make a basic sketch of the shape you're drawing, a box, a triangle, a circle, whatever. Feel free to draw sticks and circles for limbs and joints, i know I do. And make it about 50 % on the opacity bar so the coloring is pale but still noticable. I use the preset Lead pen but thats because I downloaded sai wtih already installed custom brushes so idk if you have it.

2. Sketch it out. Use your base shape to create a 2nd layer and sketch the real thing, the lines can be however you'd like I like mine clean but a little sketchy and not always connecting. For this I use a custom pen i call Sketchover because I sketch over the base.

3. Choose a size bigger or the same size for your lines, I typically make my lines black so i can define everything i wanted to. Try to make sure everything connects, i have a bad habbit of not checking and struggle with coloring later on. I use a custom line pen for this

4. I use select/ the magic wand and select to clean up any missed areas to select what I want to color. I DO NOT use the bucket. I use the pen (preset) with a very large size and color it all in one fell swoop and clean up any missed spots or spots colored outside the lines. The reason I do this is because select keeps you within the area you chose but the brush will color a little outside of that, so thick lines help cover up any major outer colors and since it colors a little outside the selected area a big size will also color in any small spots you may have missed during selection.

5. I color the inner lines of the drawing a few shades darker than the main thing, so if the line I'm coloring is the chin on a head where it connects to the throat, lets say the face color is red, I'll make the color crimson and color in the chin line. Any line that is connected to the outside of the drawing is to remain black. Once again I use the pen (preset) for this, but i change the size depending on the location and thickness of the line I'm coloring.

And since I don't really shade thats about it! If i did shade I'd probably use the line custom brush, set the layer mode to shade and thin the opacity to 25 and play around with the colors to see which works best. (i do this with eyes, and i never pick gray as my color, i typically pick a darkened color of the eye itself)

figured I'd do this while I took a small break from Osomatsu-san
enjoy!

I also plan to start using a Texture for the colors other than skin and eyes
