That "wagon" was not originally used for Christmas. Although it was definitely built to spread something, it wasn't good tidings and good cheer. Having used one many decades ago on the farm I grew up on, it was a useful device -- a manure spreader. Every year in the spring, after feeding the cattle in the loafing shed of the barn all winter, it was time to scoop up all the wonderful free fertilizer and hayseed mixture into the spreader and put it on the pasture where it could be useful. If you look at the mechanical bits on the far end you'll see the chain driven spreader that scattered the goods. One would not follow this closely when it was in action.
