They weren't dating, they never did date, they never got the time.

Before the academy they were just kids. During their time as kids Renji only rarely got mystified gazes towards Rukia. (Oh how kids cannot understand love.) Rukia was of course simply being Rukia.

Just before they entered the Academy Renji was probably JUST begining to have rare moments of silent admiration towards Rukia but was probably still too dense to realize anything about them, He WAS however focused on Rukia's best interest. Rukia was maybe JUST begining to feel a real sense of familiar comfort around Renji, but in the end still acted like Rukia.

During the Academy they were focused on the Academy, Renji of course encountered Byakuya early on and made it his goal to show him up. Rukia on the other hand was simply focused on keeping up with Renji who was some how getting a lucky break here and there and pulling ahead of her.

Kuchiki Meeting Adoption Day: Even though they probably rarely had a good moment together, Rukia was VERY comfortable with her and Renji's presence with eachother, and was more than likely just begining to look at Renji in a new way, of course by what we've learned of Rukia's past, she has had a very lonely life even when surrounded by friends, she had gotten comfortable with Renji and was now feeling nervous on weather or not she should actually attempt establishing something with him. Renji at this point was in Full on Subtle Crush mode, he was aware of how he felt about her and also wanted what was best for her, but never let on about it.

The Moment of Truth: Renji of course being the dense bafoon we know him to be, HURLS Rukia at the Kuchiki's after hearing their offer, not giving a single thought about it. Rukia of course on the other hand, has made this moment Renji's one and only test for their possible future together, She really doesn't want to go with the Kuchiki's and actually stay with Renji, and Renji's answer will cement the possibility for RenRuki once and for all for her.

The Kuchiki Years, The two completely slip away from each other, what with Rukia busy being walked on and repremanded by the Kuchiki's simply for existing and having every door to a positive future forcibly shut and completely obliterated by Byakuya, and Renji persuing his goal of Surpassing Byakuya. During this time Renji still has a crush on Rukia and plans to make her his eventually. All While Rukia has permanently banned any and all love from her heart after that whole Kaien incident and simply tries to survive without ever relizing Byakuya never plans on letting Rukia grow into a good life for herself.

And Thus Renji is Not an Ex.
