Near Misses Written by Jonathan Downs, Rachel Ravens and Zack Wanzer Warning: The following story contains mentions Adolf Hitler, the Nazi regime, explosions and near deaths. I’ll never forget the date of December 7, 1941, when Japanese forces launched a surprise attack upon the United States against the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbour in Honolulu, just before eight in the morning. With a total of 2,403 people on the American side killed (including sixty-eight civilians), 1,178 military and civilians wounded and a number of vessels and aircraft either damaged, destroyed or sunk, there was no doubt that if anything was going to end the United States of America’s neutral status, this was it.
