UnP SLSW GP30s by UtahRailfan5450 on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

From November 1961 to January 1962, the Utah & Pacific railroad aquired 50 GP30s from General Motors Electro-Motive Division. Known for their high profile and stepped cab roof, the U&P's GP30s are numbered 3000-3049 and are equipped with a Sandcast Holden K3L. While a bit underpowered compared to General Electric's U25B and ALCO's RS-27, the GP30s had otherwise proved their solidity and reliability and earned their recognition of being the first so-called "second generation" EMD diesel.

Following the U&P's reorganizaton and formation into the Salt Lake & Southwestern, the GP30s- like all other diesels built prior-were modernized and recieved the SL&SW's standad freight livery. Though proving their worthwhile in hauling mainline freight, the GP30s also find use in local freight and switching. Today, these high profile diesels can be seen on any feight-hauling and switching assignment with only a handful of GP30s retaining their original U&P livery.
