[MMD] Skydome pack 1 [REMOVED] by Wampa842 on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

Update coming... soon. Probably.

I apologoze for wasting your hard drive and network bandwidth. The reason the files are so huge is because I thought mapping the textures from the poles would reduce warping at the poles. It did, but at the cost of creating much more distortion near the equator, and using four times as many vertices.

The cylindrical texture (which was originally rendered in Max) is only a single 4096x2048 texture, compared to two 4096x4096 textures. Polar mapping also wastes a lot of pixels at the corners (round peg in a square hole, literally). But, as it turns out, warping isn't as big an issue in MMD as it appeared in PMX, as long as the vertex density near the poles is high enough.

Another thing, I designed the clouds for viewports with a 35 mm image crop, which is close to a 60 degrees view angle (I think) at which the level of detail was high enough. At MMD's default angle pf 30 degrees, you only see blobs. Not even fluff, just spots of white.

So, I'll be re-rendering and reuploading the textures soon (as in as soon as I can get my shdit together and do it).

Caution #1: huge file. I used the best compression, but since the textures themselves are already as compressed as they can be, there wasn't much I could do. If you can't download it, wait until I upload the performance-friendly pack with smaller textures, I expect it to be about half as big as this one.

Caution #2: huge textures. Some lower-end computers with small RAM cards might not be able to handle the high resolution. My computer could only handle six skydomes before MMD crashed. For those who experience crashes or missing textures, a pack with smaller resolution will be uploaded as mentioned above.

Caution #3: the .X files that come with the textures are a little bit too small. You should scale them to 100 times their size.

These skydomes were generated procedurally and rendered into textures in 3DS Max. There were no bitmap images used in production.

Most skies are more or less based on what I saw here in Hungary in the last few days, except the Tatooine one. It's the well-known "binary sunset" scene from Star Wars: A new hope, just before Luke finds out that R2D2 had gone missing. (fun fact: I ended up watching the entire film. 'Twas awesome.)
I'm sorry I can't write a proper description, I'm kind of in a hurry.

Please give me feedback. I'm planning to release at least one more pack, possibly with visible celestial bodies, but I need some ideas.
