Description

Here I show you the Subdesert Mesite, or Monias, Monias benschi. The mesites are three bird species that are entirely restricted to the island of Madagascar. They are enigmatic birds that are not closely related to any others. They've been considered to be close to the pigeons, or gamebirds, or rails, or even songbirds. They're presently put in an order of their own, and may indeed be closest to pigeons - but still very different from them. The subdesert mesite lives in the dry, spiny forests of southwestern Madagascar. They eat invertebrates and have simple songs, sometimes sung in duets, or even in choruses of three birds or more. They are threatened by destruction of their habitat.
