Invisible Woman -- 90s FF by WolfeHanson on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

The early to mid-1990s were very weird in the Marvel Universe. And even the flagship magazine in the MU, the Fantastic Four, wasn't safe from the extreme 90s craziness.⁣⁣⁣

Oof. This costume. Kids, how do I even try to explain the 1990s, the comicbook industry at the time, and the very idea of "bad girl" characters? You know what, I'm not gonna even try. But it was definitely a thing. Basically pop culture was having a hard time reconciling "strong, empowered women" as a concept with "we like to look at sexy thong ladies" as an impulse. ⁣

Regardless, Susan Richards here, better known as the Invisible Woman, "absorbed" an evil version of herself during one of the relentless and poorly conceived crossover stories of the era. So whereas she was a loving wife and mother and thoughtful superhero before, now she was an edgy and sort of unpleasant force of nature. Naturally this meant she started dressing like a space stripper. *sigh*⁣

Anyway, with all the craziness happening around her...with her brother in court for burning down a college, constant arguments with her husband, and her friend Ben being disfigured in battle....along with all the other crazy storylines coming at her in a rapid pace...we can give her a little slack, I think. Heck, I was frazzled last week and one day wore mismatched socks. It's basically the same thing.⁣

Sue started taking charge of the team, being more proactive in battle, and getting creative by putting lots of spikes and blades into her invisible forcefields. Basically an invisible, cosmic ray -empowered honey badger. ⁣
