Retribution

The light.

It was always there; it teased and taunted him. He was born into it, longed for it even, but the longer he stood in its warmth the more it burned. Wherever he turned a shadow would be there to haunt him, reminding him of his inferiority. Soon he grew jealous of the light; that jealousy turned into hatred, and Alar found himself in the comfort of darkness.

Black as night, his shadows remained hidden. There he thrived, and for a short time it was as if the world bowed to his will. But the light always seemed to find its way back; it chased away the darkness, and each time Alar would be forced to confront his own insignificance once again.

So he ran. It was the only thing he knew to do. He’d run out of its reach; he’d flee into the night so that it might swallow him whole.

It was a never-ending cycle.
