Moebius Caterpillar by xraynet on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

The Moebius Caperpillar is unusual and rarely seen, much less photographed. Considering the bright colors of this soft bodied, legless, invertebrate, one would think it would stand out from any background, but, since that background is often colorful flowers and varigated leaves, it uses its camouflage well. When a predator does find the Moebius, the caterpillar bends itself into the typical moebius form seen here, thus confounding the predator, who is usually unfamiliar with the mathematical form and becomes confused and afraid. leaving the caterpillar alone. Since small birds are the usual predator of the Moebius, you can readily see where the term "bird-brain" was derived, denoting creatures of limited mental capacity and absolutely no calculus skills.
