Johor

Sultanate of Johor was founded in the early 16th century as one of the successor states of the Malacca empire.

Johor accepted British "protection" in 1904 but opted out of the Federated Malay States.

Occupied by Japan in WWII, Johor joined the Federation of Malaya on its independence in 1957.

It has a substantial Chinese minority.
