:painter: revision Part of a series of cards the artist painted of pretty ladies and military men in uniform during the Great War. He was primarily known for his painted posters for Broadway shows. The attractive showgirls he painted in his works at the turn of the last century were often referred to as "Gunn Girls".

About the artist - Archie Gunn

Archibald, better known as Archie, began studying art in London with his father who was a painter and member of the Royal Academy. Gunn began his career as a costume designer and a portrait painter, creating theatrical posters and advertising art. In 1889 he moved to New York City primarily providing illustrations for magazinesand newspapers_._ Gunn's work also appeared on calendars and chocolate boxes.

Gunn also designed a good number of postcards for the National Art Co. on West 23rd St. in Manhattan, mainly depicting women. In addition to prints of his work they published view-cards, animal, greeting, and holiday postcards, many of which were artist signed. National folded in 1930 but Archie Gunn was one of their more notable artists.
