THE MIDWEST HIAWATHA — POPULAR SPEEDLINER OF THE MILWAUKEE ROAD
Reverse Caption:
First of the speedliners - The Milwaukee road. The streamlined Hiawathas operated daily between Chicago - Milwaukee and St. Paul Minneapolis are strikingly handsome, inside and out. They are superbly comfortable, silent and smooth riding, free from sway and vibration. Every car is air conditioned.
The Hiawathas were a fleet of elite passenger trains owned and operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (also known as the Milwaukee Road). The most notable of these trains was the original Twin Cities Hiawatha, which served the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota. The train took its name from the epic poem The Song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The original Hiawatha trains ran in 1935. By 1948, five routes carried the Hiawatha name. Amtrak retains the Hiawatha Service brand name today and continues to use the Milwaukee Road's route between Chicago and Milwaukee.
