Doctor Who fans think they may have figured out who Neil Patrick Harris is playing in the upcoming 60th anniversary special.

The How I Met Your Mother actor was announced as joining the special earlier this week, giving nothing but cryptic teases about his character.

But thanks to photos of Neil in costume and set pictures many fans are theorising that Neil might be playing the Celestial Toymaker.

On Twitter, one fan shared a photo of Neil in costume and wrote: "I am convinced it is The Toymaker.

"He even had prior history with the Doctor before they even met in the original 1960s serial, not to mention his reality warping powers to throw trials and games feels suitably 'special'."

They then followed up with a photo from the show's Bristol set showing a store front for 'Mr Emporium', adding: "Assumedly this toy shop they are setting up in Bristol for filming is the entrance to the Toyroom."

Another fan said: "He’s playing the Celestial Toymaker, 100%. He’s gotta be! The apron, the tools, the look – it can’t just be me who sees it, right? We already know Russell's bringing in characters from the comics so this wouldn't be too much of a stretch!"

Meanwhile, a third person wrote: "My immediate thought seeing this is... Celestial Toymaker? Making the Doctor play in their most dangerous adventure yet with previous selves, former companions and old enemies?"

The Celestial Toymaker was played by Michael Gough in Doctor Who's third series way back in 1966. He has also made comic book appearances.

Harris previously teased his character, telling fans on Instagram: "My current gig. Never looked more dashing.

"Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse, @russelltdavies63. I'll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what's in store. And even if he does… Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha!"

Doctor Who 's next special premieres in Autumn 2022 on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max.
