KRAKKKOOOMMMMM! Thunder breaks over Amazon and man-mountain Alan Ritchson rises once again to break skulls and demolish bad guys. Reacher season two was confirmed by Prime Video shortly after the first season proved to be a hit for the streaming service, and it's nearly here.

After a brief hiatus following Tom Cruise's take on the role, the series brought Lee Child's Jack Reacher back to our screens. But this time, the screens are a bit smaller than before because Reacher now airs as a TV show on Prime Video.

Despite that, Reacher himself is bigger than ever now that Ritchson has taken on the lead role. At 6 foot 2 inches, the Titans star is closer to the character's imposing 6 foot 5 inches in the books, and he certainly puts that frame to good use in Reacher season one.

We'd bet on Reacher continuing for years to come.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, outlined the streamer's strategy (via Variety) to pursue big globe-trotting fantasy, like The Wheel of Time and Rings of Power, as well as action-genre fare like Reacher.

"Those are two areas that we will invest in as global tentpole content strategies. But we also want to appeal to local audiences," Salke said. "People will come for the big global content. But what we don't want is a customer to come in to be able to just watch one show, and then there's nothing else for them. So we want to make sure we are really surfacing to them a collection of content that they love."

Not only does Jack Reacher have a couple of movies starring Cruise to entertain fans of the show, but there's also a lengthy series of books available on Amazon. It's the Rings of Power approach: TV, movies, books, all available in one place – the ultimate triple threat.

It's been confirmed that season two will land on December 15, as revealed on X/Twitter in the new trailer dropped by Prime Video.

"We're back, bigger and better than ever," Ritchson said in an Instagram video while filming. "Ready to kick things off with a Reacher slate. This makes it official, we're in."

"I just came off set. Reacher season two, the last scene is done. As you can see, things got a little crazy. We promised things will be back bigger and better than ever. And we did not lie."

He moved over to a giant clapboard and added: "We do it Reacher style. Here it is to close out the season."

Ritchson then clapped the board before declaring: "It's officially done. Season two is back bigger and better than ever. We promised we would, and the proof is in the pudding."

So Ritchson has clearly got the memo about reminding fans that season two will be "bigger and better", but beyond that, a new season is within grasp! If you're jonesing for a Ritchson hit, then we've got a little something to keep you entertained until season two arrives.

Why yes indeed, it's right here, and it makes season two look every bit like the brutal, two-fisted (or eight-fisted – it's a team-up) vengeance mission we're hoping for.

Reacher season 2 cast: Who is returning?

Amazon Prime

Reacher season one featured the likes of Malcolm Goodwin's Finley, Willa Fitzgerald's Roscoe and Harvey Guillén's Jasper alongside Ritchson's Reacher, of course.

But given how the finale ended (more on that in a bit), it looks like the only cast member who's guaranteed to return is Alan Ritchson as Reacher himself.

Reacting to Reacher's quick season two renewal, Ritchson shared the following on Instagram: "Whoaaaaaa!!! This is incredible! Unlike Reacher who chooses to say nothing, I'm simply speechless.

"In just our opening weekend you've made #ReacheronPrime one of @primevideo most watched shows EVER! That is insane.

"There are so many people I'm grateful to for making this show as enjoyable as it is. But all of the creative genius and unwavering commitment by all those behind this would amount to nothing if you weren't enjoying the world of Reacher. Thank you, thank you, thank you."

As readers of the books know, there are very few returning characters between stories, but one of the few is Reacher's former Army subordinate Frances Neagley. It has been confirmed, via Deadline, that Maria Sten will be making a return for the second instalment.

Moving forward, it's possible that Maxwell Jenkins might also return as a Young Reacher in more flashbacks. But if he ages up too fast, then the production team may consider replacing him for season two if they want to reveal more of Reacher's childhood.

(Honestly: not likely, now that the basic facts have been covered off – Lee Child doesn't give Reacher much more backstory than you've already seen, save for the books set during his military time.)

The young actor is certainly hoping to stay involved with the successful show. "Lee Child has created an incredible world with his Jack Reacher novels," Jenkins told Pop Culturalist.

"Nick Santora and the writers, directors, and main cast have adapted it beautifully and authentically, and I think audiences appreciate that. There's a reason these novels are so beloved.

"The stories are exciting. The characters are unique and fun to go on a journey with. I am proud to be even a small part of such a great series, and I hope I get to continue adding where I can to the Reacher story."

It has been confirmed that Willa Fitzgerald, who played police officer Roscoe Conklin in season one, will not return.

During an interview with Digital Spy for the UK release of the movie 18½, she explained that she knew from the start that it would be a one-time appearance.

"Yeah, I did know that from the get-go," she said. "I think that's a great opportunity to get to tell a clean and complete story, and then be able to walk away. I think it's a unique experience in TV."

"It's nice to have the agency to know that that is a complete, finished product," she added later in the chat. "And it was also great to be able to start off the whole Reacher world."

A host of new names have been announced ahead of season two, though, with a complete cast shake-up possibly on the cards.

Serinda Swan (Inhumans, Ballers) has been announced as Karla Dixon, while other names joining the cast include 24 star Rory Cochrane, Boardwalk Empire's Domenick Lombardozzi, Ferdinand Kingsley (The Sandman, Victoria), The Man in the High Castle's Ty Victor Olsson, See's Josh Blacker and Suits' Al Sapienza.

Arrow's Dean McKenzie has also been added, along with The 100's Shannon Kook-Chun, Good Witch's Luke Bilyk, Honor Society's Andres Collantes and Fahrenheit 451's Edsson Morales.

As for whether any of the other season one cast may make a surprise return, showrunner Nick Santora has seemingly kept things open to speculation.

"I will say this, and I'm not trying to be coy or cute: You never know if a character might come back," Santora told TV Line. "We might come up with a great idea and say, 'You know what? Maybe that character can work in season two or season three,' and then you bring them back for a bit or for an extended visit."

With that being said, Santora also pointed out a key aspect of the storytelling, stressing: "Reacher is not a character who runs around with an entourage. He's a lone wolf, so you have to stay true to that."

Reacher season 2 plot: What will happen in Reacher season 2?

Amazon Prime

Reacher season one followed Jack's search for whoever killed his brother, and by the end of the final episode, the case is pretty much wrapped up.

With that mystery solved, Reacher decides to part ways with Margrave in search of something new, despite Roscoe's hope to the contrary. "If you wander back, give me a call," she says before handing Reacher a chocolate wrapper with her number written across it.

After he says his goodbyes, Reacher buries a medal (which has great sentimental value) in his brother's resting place. And then, wiping away his tears, he hitchhikes onto new pastures.

Season one was based on the first Jack Reacher book, Killing Floor, and it's now been announced that the second season will be jumping ahead to book number 11. Entitled Bad Luck and Trouble, the book sees Reacher's old investigative unit brought back together when one of its members is killed.

Show boss Santora previously told TV Line that fans shouldn't necessarily expect them to go chronologically, so the decision to jump ahead isn't all that surprising.

And there's plenty of source material left for Reacher to continue to draw from — 26 novels, in fact — so a lot could still be explored in future seasons.

When previously asked by Radio Times which book could be adapted next, Child said: "I haven't read the books. I've written them. I never reread them. I know them by reputation, what other people tell me about him. And there are some that are really popular.

"I think what was so great about this first season was Reacher's loneliness being assuaged by his relationships with other people, and I would like to see more of that. And there [are] two or three books that really stand out in that sense. So maybe one of them."

Whatever happens, Amazon Studios' head of television Vernon Sanders gave a Reacher update in December 2022, promising that season two will be "awesome".

"As great as season one was, I think season two delivers beyond that," he added.

Reacher is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
