Formed after his ouster from Iron Maiden, Battlezone was vocalist Paul Di'Anno's chance to move beyond Iron Maiden's increasingly dramatic style of metal. Obviously, Battlezone was never at Iron Maiden's caliber, but they did provide Di'Anno the perfect outlet for his punk-influenced approach to heavy metal. This is snarling, nasty, streetwise metal with real energy and aggression, and is well worth hearing if you're a fan of British metal.
The 2008 box set, titled The Fight Goes On, collects Battlezone's first three studio albums. You get 1986's Fighting Back, 1987's Children of Madness and 1998's Feel My Pain. That's the good news. The bad news is that Fighting Back and Children of Madness sound pretty terrible. I've bought some good-sounding reissues from Zoom Club in the past, so I'm more than a little disappointed that they didn't do anything to clean up these albums. Feel My Pain sounds just fine, but it's the weakest of the three albums. It doesn't help matters that inside the slim box the discs come in cheap cardboard sleeves with no booklet.
If you're a fan of Paul Di'Anno's work in Killers and of course Iron Maiden, you'll want to check out some Battlezone, and despite its flaws The Fight Goes On is the logical place to start. Just don't expect audio or packaging quality on par with the average Castle or even Metal Mind reissue.Have:72
