What is DubJUG?
The Dublin Java User Group (DubJUG) is a community of software developers working with JVM languages. Proudly supported by our many partners, our events are designed to bridge the Java knowledge gap, helping our community of developers upskill with practical workplace skills, and at the same time local businesses to access stronger team members with the know-how to get engineering problems solved.
Our monthly events offer insight and best practice into real-world technology use delivered by world renowned Java experts - the ones you'd typically only see at major international conferences. DubJUG also fosters local networking among Java professionals.
EVENTS
Since 2007, we have literally held hundreds of events, from evening meetups to weekend coding parties. Bringing developers together is truly magic. Not only are the events a source of knowledge, they are also a vibrant atmosphere to meet new friends, colleagues and prospective partners.
"I’ve actually attended several DubJUG events and really enjoyed them. As I’m transitioning my career from manufacturing engineering to Java development (at junior level), the talks have been incredibly helpful. They've not only deepened my knowledge but also helped me prepare for interviews."

Serverless Deep Dive with Bert Ertman

A frequent speaker on Java, cloud, and software architecture all over the world, Bert is a book author and serial conference organizer. Bert Ertman was awarded the coveted title of Java Champion in 2008, and is a JavaOne RockStar speaker and Duke’s Choice award winner.
# **Serverless Deep Dive**
##Doors Open 18:15 (evening session)
.
##**Serverless Deep Dive**
No server can be more easily managed than no server. Therefore: meet Serverless, a paradigm that truly approaches the Pay-as-You-Go philosophy once promised by the Cloud.
In this deep dive Bert will explore the Serverless paradigm by diving into the Serverless manifesto first and by explaining the differences between Serverless, FaaS, and PaaS., and then looking at the different Cloud vendors and what they have to offer in the Serverless space.
After the theoretical first part, Bert will start developing some functions with AWS Lambda, since it is, he says, by far the easiest entry point into the world of Serverless. Then he will take a step back to discuss how existing architectures (ie modern web applications) will be impacted. Where does it actually make sense to use this kind of technology and where doesn't it.
Finally Bert will end with a number of drawbacks to consider and to make it a balanced story of both pros and cons.
Besides AWS Lambda, he'll look at alternatives like Apache OpenWhisk and recently announced Project Fn as well.
This talk thoroughly explores Serverless, its impact on existing architectures, and assesses it's usability for Mobile Back-ends as a Service (MBaaS), Functions-as-a-Service (FaaS) and for Microservices hosted in the cloud. Internet connectivity permitting, there will be lots of demos too..

vJUG - A Craftsman’s Guide to Designing a Clean Architecture
19 Apr 2018
We welcomed a Virtual Java User Group screening at the Dublin Java User Group.
##Marcus Biel
# **A Craftsman’s Guide to Designing a Clean Architecture**
##Doors Open 16:30 for 17:00 start.
.
In 2018, it seems like Microservices are the de facto standard for a system architecture, but do they really live up to the hype?
The talk will show you an alternative approach - how we can tame complexity with the help of a clean, monolithic architecture that is modular to the core. Java has been deliberately built from the ground up on a modular basis: Methods, classes, packages. Additionally, the module system was introduced in Java 9. Modularity is based on the fundamental concepts of high cohesion and low coupling. We will look at these concepts, as well as some further measures, in detail. We'll check out what they are, how they are related to one another, and what the best practices are for applying them on all levels of the architecture.
The talk will show you how you can apply these basic concepts to develop a clean, monolithic architecture, based on Java 9 modules and the hexagonal architecture pattern. Finally, we'll learn how to achieve a clean microservice architecture based on a modular architecture.

On the evening of 11th April, DubJUG co-lead Barry Evans ran a workshop built upon a session he attended at JavaOne.
Barry presented *Starting Out with JUnit 5*.
Doors opened at 18:15 (evening session).
.
Barry's workshop builds upon a JavaOne session he attended that was run by Jeanne Boyarsky, author of the official Oracle OCA/OCP study guides.
The difference between JUnit 4 and 5 is far bigger than the difference between 3 and 4. [**JUnit 5 was released**](https://junit.org/junit5/docs/5.0.0/user-guide/#release-notes-5.0.0) on 10th September 2017, so it is high time to learn about next-generation JUnit.
Attendees in this session will migrate a JUnit 4 application to JUnit 5, while learning what’s changed and the new styles of unit testing that JUnit 5 enables.

Class Loaders, Spring and Java with Simon Maple
28 Mar 2018
Our March event was special! We hosted Java Champion and JavaOne Rockstar Simon Maple, Virtual JUG founder, London Java Community co-leader, RebelLabs author, and Duke’s Choice award winner.
Simon presented..
# **Do You Really Get Class Loaders**
##and
# **Productive and Effective Development with Spring and Java EE**
##Doors Open 18:15 (evening session)
.
Simon is an experienced speaker, having presented at JavaOne, JavaZone, Jfokus, DevoxxUK, DevoxxFR, JavaZone, JMaghreb and many more including many JUG tours. His passion is around user groups and communities.
When not traveling, Simon enjoys spending quality time with his family, cooking and eating great food.

.
##**Do You Really Get Class Loaders**
Class loaders are at the core of the Java language. Java EE containers, OSGi, NetBeans modules, Tapestry 5, Grails, and many others use class loaders heavily. Yet if something went wrong, would you know how to solve it?
This session takes a tour of the Java class loading mechanism, from both the JVM and developer points of view.
It looks at typical class loading problems and how to solve them. ClassNoDefError, IncompatibleClassChangeError, LinkageError, and many others are symptoms of specific things going wrong that you can usually find and fix.
For each problem, the presentation goes through a hands-on demo with a corresponding solution. It also takes a look at how and why class loaders leak and how you can remedy that.
##**Productive and Effective Development with Spring and Java EE**
This live coding session shines some light on a range of productivity tools that make software development a pleasure rather than a chore.
Simon will live-code two applications. The first, a Java EE application with JBoss Forge that uses JPA, Bean Validation, REST, and Angular, is tested with Arquillian from within JBoss Forge. You’ll see how a Java EE microservice can be developed in Forge and run with JBoss Swarm.
The second application is developed on Spring Boot, and you’ll see how to develop and run a Spring application with JRebel. You’ll learn how to write code productively with tools designed for developers.

Microservices in Action at the Dutch National Police & Vert.x
22 Feb 2018
For our second DubJUG event of 2018, we were very honoured to have Java Champion, JavaOne Rockstar, and leader of the NLJUG, Bert Jan Schrijver, come to Dublin to share his immense knowledge with our community. But this was not academic stuff! He shared real-life project cases, discussed why and how the Dutch National Police force implemented microservices, and why a startup uses the Vert.x event-driven, non-blocking, and polyglot toolkit for building reactive applications.
Bert Jan presented...
# **Microservices in Action at the Dutch National Police**
##and
# **Building Microservices with Vert.x**
##Doors Open 18:15 (evening session)
.
.
#**About Bert Jan Schrijver**
Bert Jan is a software craftsman at Dutch software consultancy JPoint and CTO at OpenValue. He has a strong focus on Java, Continuous Delivery and DevOps.
Bert Jan is a Java Champion, JavaOne Rock Star speaker and user group leader for NLJUG, the Dutch Java User Group. He loves to share his experience by speaking at conferences, writing for the Dutch Java magazine and helping out Devoxx4Kids with teaching kids how to code.

# **Microservices in Action at the Dutch National Police**
Microservices? At the Police? Definitely!
At the Cloud, Big Data and Internet division of the Dutch National Police, 3 DevOps teams use the latest open source technology to build high tech web applications. These applications are used to support digital investigation and incident response with data from open, online sources and are built using Spring Boot, Angular 2.x, Spark, Kafka and Jenkins 2.
In this session, Bert Jan will share their experiences and real-world use cases for microservices. He will explain the architecture, why it was chosen, which challenges were faced and how this brought the three teams together to work on one product, loosely based on the models used by Spotify and Netflix.
Bert Jan will also share how the principles of DevOps and Continuous Delivery were applied, and how security, build pipelines, test automation, performance tests, automated deployments and monitoring were handled.
You'll leave this session with an understanding of how this approach enabled the team to have the agility of a startup within the large Police organisation.
.
# **Building Microservices with Vert.x**
Vert.x is a toolkit for building reactive applications on the JVM. It is event driven, non blocking and polyglot, which makes it an excellent platform for building microservices. It was awarded for 'Most Innovative Java Technology' at the JAX Innovation awards.
In this talk, Bert Jan will share experiences and real-world use cases from a Dutch company that started building reactive web applications with Vert.x about 4 years ago. You'll learn the concepts behind Vert.x, why Vert.x was chosen, how it is being used and the challenges that were faced.
Topics include the anatomy of the projects, (micro)services architecture, deployment model and DevOps, scalability, the upgrade from Vert.x 2 to Vert.x 3 and cooperation with the team behind Vert.x.
At the end of this session, you'll know enough about Vert.x to get started yourself right away!

Java EE 7 Meets Java 8 / Clustering MicroProfile Application using CDI and JCache
17 Jan 2018
With Java 8 EE taking way longer to release than first expected, it seemed like Java 9 EE could have been some time off, and since there were many companies in Dublin using Java 7, their engineers were interested in our first DubJUG event of 2018, which saw Senior Java EE Engineer Roberto Cortez from the Seattle-based startup Tomitribe talk about how Java EE 7 meets Java 8, and clustering MicroProfile applications using CDI and JCache.
Roberto presented...
# **Java EE 7 Meets Java 8**
##and
# **Cluster your MicroProfile Application using CDI and JCache**
##Doors Open 18:15 (evening session)
.
.
#**About Roberto Cortez**
Robert was born in Venezuela, but has spent most of his life in Coimbra, Portugal. With a degree in Informatics Engineering (equivalent to the Bologna Master’s degree) from the Department of Informatics Engineering of the University of Coimbra, he has been working as a Java Developer for 10 years in business areas like Finance, Insurance and Government.
Roberto works with many Java based technologies like JavaEE, Spring, Hibernate, GWT, JBoss AS and Maven just to name a few, always relying on IntelliJ IDEA, which he says is his favourite IDE.
As a Freelancer / Independent Contractor he travels the world to customers, but also to speak at Java conferences. The direct contact with the Java community made him want to become an active member in the community itself. For that reason, he created the Coimbra Java User Group, and started to contribute to Open Source on Github so he can share some of the knowledge that he has gained over the years.
After working for a few major corporations, he became eager to help and grow something from the ground up, so currently works with Seattle based start-up Tomitribe which focus on developing and supporting TomEE, a Java Application server based on Tomcat with Java EE support.

# **Java EE 7 Meets Java 8**
The last few years have been pretty exciting for Java with new versions of EE and SE platforms.
Java EE, introduced a new API to build WebSockets; a new API to parse, process and generate JSON; a new Client API in JAX-RS to invoke REST services, and finally the Batch Processing API to build batch applications.
Java SE brought us the long awaited Lambda expressions; the powerful Streams API to perform operations like filtering, mapping or sorting in a very easy and fluent way, and a brand new Date Time API, to deal with the complexities of Timezones and Periods.
This session will combine all of these elements together and show you how to easily develop an application using Java SE 8 with Java EE 7, with live coding and samples.
.
.
# **Cluster your MicroProfile Application using CDI and JCache**
Microprofile is a new platform definition that optimizes Enterprise Java for a Microservices Architecture and delivers application portability across multiple runtimes. You can use a subset of the Java EE specifications to develop Microprofile applications, with JAX-RS, CDI and JSON-P. Now you need to make it highly available and scalable across a large number of machines.
The session will feature a live coding demo where we will turn this Microprofile application, into a fully clustered application using only standard Java API’s. Finally, to show you how light it is, we will run the entire cluster in a set up of Raspberry PI’s.

Java Challenges - An Interactive Quiz Testing You!
13 Dec 2017
Our last event of 2017 saw Barry Evans and Rafael Chinelato Del Nero present *10 Java Challenges*, an interactive Java quiz that stretched attendees’ grey matter. Representing the Dublin Java User Group, the duo had first presented *Java Challenges* at JavaOne and had since put developers in Belfast, Brazil, and Bangladesh to the test — so it was about time they challenged you guys in Dublin too. Well done to Synchronoss guys Brian Matthews and Fatih Aydin, who scored 8/10!

Class Loaders, Spring and Java with Simon Maple
06 Dec 2017
Our March event was special! We hosted Java Champion and JavaOne Rockstar Simon Maple, founder of the Virtual JUG, co-leader of the London Java Community, RebelLabs author, and Duke’s Choice award winner.
Simon presented...
You can follow him on twitter at [**@sjmaple**](https://twitter.com/sjmaple), [**@virtualjug**](https://twitter.com/virtualjug) and [**@zeroturnaround**](https://twitter.com/zeroturnaround)

Java 9 and the Eclipse Collection with Nikhil Nanivadekar
28 Nov 2017
Towards the end of November, we hosted the lead of the Eclipse Collections project, Nikhil Nanivadekar, as he whistle-stopped around Europe and beyond. Nikhil, who is also a VP at Goldman Sachs, was a regular sight at the world’s top Java conferences.
Nikhil presented...
# **How to Make a Project Java 9-Compatible**
##and
# **Collections.compare: JDK, Eclipse, Guava, Apache...**
##Doors Open 18:15 (evening session)
.
Nikhil Nanivadekar is a Vice President in Private Wealth Management in the Technology division of Goldman Sachs, and is also the project lead and committer for Eclipse Collections. He graduated in 2012 from University of Utah with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Robotics and Controls.
He has presented at JavaOne, DevoxxUS and Java User Group meetups. He is passionate about robotics has conducted robotics workshops at JCrete4Kids, JavaOne4Kids and Devoxx4Kids.
You can follow him on twitter at [**@NikhilNanivade**](https://twitter.com/NikhilNanivade)
.
##**How to Make a Project Java 9-Compatible**
Java 9 brings numerous changes that might break existing applications. This presentation is a case study of making a third-party Java Collections library (Eclipse Collections) Java 9–compatible.
You will get an overview of all the steps taken and the evolution of the final, Java 9–compatible product. These steps are essentially similar to those you might have to take to upgrade your application to use JDK 9.
The session covers available tooling and simple yet practical tips and tricks that will help you in the upgrade process.
##**Collections.compare: JDK, Eclipse, Guava, Apache...**
Collections are a staple in any programming language: the need to collect, sort, or iterate over values is needed by nearly all developers. The Java language introduced the Collections framework long ago. It has plenty to offer, but many find it lacking: the number of collection libraries as active open source projects demonstrates the need for something else.
This session does a holistic comparison of the most-common collections (pun intended!) frameworks, what they have to offer, and what you should consider for your next project. It also shows common programmer use cases; how each library handles them; and the impact on memory, processing power, and ease of use/coding.
Come and let us help you choose the right bag for your tricks!

Top Ways to Deliver Java Code to the Cloud
31 Oct 2017
Our final October meetup was presented by Las Vegas-based Microsoft Developer Advocate Brian Benz, who showed some of the easiest ways for Java developers to deliver their code to the cloud using Linux command line tools.
Brian was a Senior Developer Advocate at Microsoft, helping Java developers get the most out of Azure. Before joining Microsoft, he had been a solution architect, consultant, developer, author, and presenter at IBM, Deloitte, and other companies.
You could follow him on Twitter at @bbenz.
.
##**Top Ways to Deliver Your Java Code to the Cloud**
Brian will highlight the easiest ways for Java developers to deliver their code to the cloud and the best ways to reliably make updates and maintain production cloud code.
The focus will be on real-world examples using Linux command line tools, open source tools such as Jenkins, and other free SDKs and tools available on GitHub.
The examples, tools and demos that he shows will be applicable to any cloud platform, and all are available on GitHub. He will show Microsoft Azure running the samples - this is a technical talk that will focus on the code.
