Bishop Paiute Tribe Pays Tribute and Lays to Rest Local Pahabichi (Bear), Victor
BISHOP, CA – The Bishop Paiute Tribe and its community are deeply mourning the loss of one of their sacred relatives, Victor the Pahabichi, who was tragically killed and discarded at the Bishop-Sunland Landfill. Upon learning of the incident, the Tribe swiftly acted to recover Victor and ensure he received the respect and ceremony he deserved.
On the morning of Tuesday, August 27th, 2024, the Bishop Paiute Tribe came together to honor Victor in a moving ceremony. Tribal members and community members gathered to send Victor off in a respectful and heartfelt manner.
The ceremony was a powerful and emotional tribute, featuring prayers, songs, and offerings made in Victor’s honor. The Tribe is grateful for the opportunity to provide Victor with a proper burial, recognizing the Pahabichi is sacred to their community and acknowledging their role as visitors on Pahabichi homelands.
The Bishop Paiute Tribal Council intends to meet with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife to address these concerns and seek a better understanding to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
The Bishop Tribal Council extends its deepest respect and appreciation to tribal elder Carolyn Stone, the singers, and the Bishop Paiute Tribe Public Works for their contributions to this solemn occasion.
