Berlioz, Beethoven & Schubert. Ely Cathedral. Saturday 21st September.

Freya GoldmarkEly Sinfonia is delighted to announce that one of the country’s most promising young violinists, Cambridgeshire’s own Freya Goldmark, will be joining it to play Beethoven’s violin concerto in D with them in a concert in Ely Cathedral on Saturday 21st September, starting at 7.30pm.

Freya has performed all over the world as a soloist and ensemble player and is leader of the Ligeti Quartet. She is in huge demand as a teacher and was the youngest ever director of the Cambridge Music Festival.

But the concert will start with the Roman Carnival Overture (Carnaval Romain), nine minutes of sheer energy when we experience the brightest colours of composer Hector Berlioz, combining lush melody and lively dance.

The evening finishes with Schubert’s 9th Symphony in C major, aptly named The Great, the first of the big Romantic symphonies, which ends with the Allegro vivace finale, arguably Schubert’s single most important orchestral achievement and one of the most impressive symphonic movements ever written.

Tickets cost £10, £20 and £25 and are available from Ely Cathedral box office, tel 01353 660349 or email box.office@elycathedral.org, or online from https://www.elycathedral.org/events/beethoven-berlioz-schubert
