Marine Microbes

The research of Prof. Dr. Alexandra Z. Worden's group focuses on the regulation of photoautotrophic microbes with an emphasis on carbon cycling in marine systems. This includes studies on the basic biology of eukaryotic microbes and how these studies can inform us about the evolution of eukaryotes, including land plants.

Another focus of the research group is on the interaction between microbes and viruses. The group develops and implements methods and technologies for marine research, including innovations in genomics, metagenomics and transcriptomics.

Prof. Worden is a Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation Marine Investigator and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.
