What do you think your life would be like if you couldn't read the signs on the side of the roads, the articles in a magazine, or simply understand what your teacher is saying when she is trying to teach a lesson to everyone? What if you moved far away from where you born or maybe not far away but to a different county? You moved to a new county that was very different from where you came from. In this new place you drove on a different side of the road, everyone dressed different, and they even spoke a different language. How do you think you and maybe even your family would be able to handle such a drastic change in all of your lifestyles. .
The transition would have to be a tough one to endure. If you are an immigrant coming from a foreign country to America there would be so many things you would have to learn just to get along in everyday life. You would definitely have to learn to drive on the right side of the road and you would need to learn Basic English at least. You would have to go to school or work not knowing what the people around you are saying. You would have to deal with the people who are against you because of the fact that you do not come from the country they come from (assuming that they are not immigrants). Life in America for a non-English speaking person is not an easy life.
Imagine that a family of immigrants from Mexico has just settled into their American home. They are not in an area where very many Spanish speaking people live and they are not familiar with English. They are not sure what to buy in what stores or how to get the money that they have changed over. The father knows some basic words in English, but how far can that take a man who has a wife and a family that he has to support?.
The first few things that the parents would need to do is to get their children in school and they also both need to get a job. Registering their children for school would definitely prove to be difficult.
