Teachers mold and shape every individual into who they become as an adult. They are responsible for preparing us for the future and this is clearly not a simple task. Disqualified teachers have an overwhelming negative effect on the students in America. Every student has had an awful experience with a teacher and this can have extremely negative consequences. With the amount of hours that students spend in class, having a quality teacher is crucial. Currently there is a tenure system in public schools, which states that teachers with three or more years of experience cannot be fired without criminal reasons or a just cause. Teacher tenure is allowing inadequate teachers to have a wrongly secured job. .
While new teachers are constantly being evaluated, teachers with tenure are sure that their job is secure. Therefore, they put in the minimum effort because their positions are secured. Being fortunate enough to come from a fantastic public school allowed me to have many fantastic teachers, although there were a handful of teachers that created a plethora of anger and discussion among students. The teachers could be simply named and students would just start groaning and spewing of their personally nightmare stories of the teacher. I personally witnessed this when one of these tenured teachers lost my test and instead of admitting that she lost it, she assumed that I didn't take it and gave me zero percent. Many of my peers had similar situations with these teachers and it outraged students. She would constantly lose her belongings and accuse students of taking them as a prank; yet, she would always realize this wasn't the case when she found them in her own mess. As one can imagine, this was extremely aggravating considering that we spent an hour of our time every single day, nine months a year. .
Tenure also creates an extremely significant problem when it comes to firing unqualified teachers.
